Anzac Day

Anzac Day is celebrated throughout West Wimmera Shire with events being held in Apsley, Edenhope, Goroke, Harrow and Kaniva.

In 2017, details of these events were:

Apsley

10:45am Assemble at War Memorials
11:00am: March to Town Hall
Anzac Day Service
Guest Speaker: Glen Hamlyn, about walking the Kokoda Trail
March to War Memorials for laying of wreaths
Light lunch provided in RSL Hall
Host: Langkoop/Apsley RSL Sub-Branch

Edenhope

8:00am: "Moose's Breakfast" at RSL Hall, Langford Street, $5/head, memberships available
10:30am: Anzac Day Service at Cenotaph
Followed by Service at Edenhope Mechanics Hall
Guest Speaker: Greg Robertson
Followed by light refreshments at RSL Hall to watch AFL Anzac Day Memorial Football Match between Essendon & Collingwood
Host: Edenhope RSL Sub-Branch

Goroke

10:00am March from Police Station to War Memorial (assemble at 9:30am)
Memorial Service in Goroke Hall
Guest Speaker: Jacob McGennisken, former student of Goroke College, about his visit to Gallipoli
Wreath & cross laying at War Memorial
Morning tea & display of memorabilia in Goroke Hall [please bring a plate of morning tea]
Host: Goroke War Memorial Committee, assisted by Goroke P12 Advance Group

Harrow

10:00am Ecumenical Service, Harrow RSL Hall
10:30am March past of veterans & RSL members, with piper Andrew Teusner
Guest Speaker
Wreath laying ceremony, followed by The Last Post, Reveille, National Anthem
Morning tea & refreshments at the Hall (a donation would be appreciated)
Host: Harrow RSL Sub-Branch

Kaniva

10:30am: Assemble at RSL Park for 10:55am start
Anzac Day Service
Followed by refreshments at Club Hotel (gold coin donation please)
Anzac Centenary Commemoration Display (shop next to Chemist in main street) will be open for viewing

World War One (WW1) Soldier Settlement Memorials

In 2016, we honoured the impact the World War One soldier settlement had on shaping our region with the unveiling of several memorial plaques across the Shire.

These WW1 Soldier Settlement Memorials were generously supported by the Victorian Government and the Victorian Veterans Council.

They can be visited by interested residents or members of the public at:

MIGA LAKE

Miga Lake Estate WW1 Soldier Settlement
Location: Miga Lake Hall, Nhill-Harrow Road, Miga Lake (approx 5km south of Wimmera Highway intersection)

COVE

Cove Estate WW1 Soldier Settlement
Location: Cove, corner of Cove and Alexander Roads (approx 23km north west of Kaniva)

PERONNE

Mortat Estate WW1 Soldier Settlement (change of name from Mortat to Peronne in 1925)
Location: Grounds of Peronne Hall, Natimuk-Frances Road, Peronne (approx 15km west of Goroke)

BENAYEO

Benayeo Estate WW1 Soldier Settlement
Location: Benayeo Hall on Benayeo Road (approx 18km north west of Apsley)
