On the 23rd of August, 15 West Wimmera senior citizens took the opportunity to attend a Computer Savvy Seniors class held in conjunction with the Edenhope branch of Wimmera Regional Library Corporation and the Edenhope College.
The Computer Savvy Seniors class covered a large variety topics from introduction to computers, the internet and social media to useful tips on unsubscribing from pesky emails, using tablets, downloading music, using Microsoft office, and searching YouTube. Participants also learnt how to surf the internet using auctions sites to shop and search for bargains.
The response to this class was so high that we partnered with Edenhope College, who were able to enlist the help of 4 very tech savvy Year 9 students to assist in the delivery. The students were a great asset, enabling greater individual assistance for participants and even assisting the instructors with the tech on occasion.
The class was held in the comfort of the Edenhope Library and we thank the Wimmera Regional Library Corporation for their support in providing the venue including the Wi-Fi and computers.
Feedback from the course has been extremely positive with all participants interested in participating in further sessions. They aim to refresh what they have learned as well as continuing to extend their tech knowledge, skills and confidence.
Participants have requested for future classes to include other topics such as how to transfer photos from smart phones as well as more advanced classes as the program grows to continue to develop their skills.
"We were very surprised at the level of interest that these classes have received. Not just here in Edenhope, but in other West Wimmera communities as well. We are currently working with the Goroke Seniors to set a day to run the course there, as well as pursuing possible interest in Harrow" commented Jo Grant, West Wimmera Shire Community Services Team Leader.
If you would like to participate in a Computer Savvy Seniors class or even just come along and observe, please register your interest with Jo, Natalie or Tania at West Wimmera Shire Council on 5585 9900.
"This is a great opportunity for senior residents to come together, learn new skills and gain confidence in using the technology and devises that are now such a part of our daily lives. Council is happy to support learning opportunities for our residents and communities" said Mayor Bruce Meyer.
