West Wimmera Shire will once again be hosting a Victorian Seniors Concert to celebrate the Victorian Seniors Festival. The 2017 concert will be held at 2.00pm on Thursday 19 October at the Edenhope Mechanics Hall, featuring entertainment by Honey Bee and the Stingers. The event will commence with the announcement of the West Wimmera 2017 Senior Citizen of the Year.
The Victorian Seniors Festival is a Victorian Government initiative that supports and celebrates the contribution of Victoria's one million-plus seniors. Now in its 35th year, the Festival will showcase social, cultural and educational activities in October, which are hosted by the Victorian Government, local councils, community groups and commercial partners.
The theme for this year is 'You're welcome'. This year's theme underpins the Festival's commitment to inclusivity and support for diversity, in addition to promoting the 'come and have a try' message associated with the Festival in recent years.
Honey Bee and the Stingers - a 1950's and 1960's Rock & Roll band - will entertain the audience, which will be followed by afternoon tea. Entry is free and tickets are available from the Edenhope and Kaniva Council Offices.
Bus transport to the concert is provided, leaving from the Kaniva Council office travelling via Goroke with pick up at the Goroke Senior Citizens through to Edenhope and return. The bus timetable will be finalised closer to the date.
"This is a great opportunity for our senior residents to come together for an afternoon of fun, entertainment and friendship as well as to celebrate the valuable contribution seniors make to our communities. The Senior of the Year award acknowledges the significant achievements and contributions of those in our community aged 60 and over continue to make to West Wimmera" commented West Wimmera Shire Mayor, Bruce Meyer.
There are a wide variety of free events in Victoria throughout the month of October. Seniors Card holders in Victoria can travel on public transport for free between Sunday 8 October and Sunday 15 October, across metropolitan and regional services. Throughout the year, Seniors Card holders are eligible for concession fares on trains, trams and buses, including V/Line trains and coaches (50 per cent discount on a full fare).
