West Wimmera Shire has presented its annual Student Citizenship Awards to three outstanding students within the Shire.
"The Shire's 2018 Student Citizenship Awards have been presented to Jasmin Tucker from Edenhope College, Sophie Walter from Goroke College, and Jock Maddern from Kaniva College" said Mayor Jodie Pretlove.
Councillor Trevor Domaschenz presented the award at the Goroke College Presentation Night on Friday 14 December 2018, and Mayor Pretlove presented the award at the Edenhope College Presentation Night on Wednesday 19 December 2018.
"The award presented to a Kaniva College recipient is unique in that it bears the surname of a current Councillor" said Mayor Pretlove. "It is officially known as the R G Hicks Memorial / Shire of West Wimmera Student Citizenship Award, and was established by Mr R G Hicks in 1963. So it was very fitting that his son – Councillor Richard Hicks – presented the award at the Kaniva College Presentation Night on Tuesday 18 December 2018."
Each College selects its own award recipient using criteria set by the Shire, which include willingness to accept positions of responsibility and participate in College activities, setting a mature example, interacting well with staff, peers and younger children, willingness to assist in tasks beneficial to the College community, involvement in community activities, and setting a positive example regarding sound and responsible attitudes to study.
The Award consists of a framed certificate and a $300 cheque to be used towards future education expenses. Eligible recipients are students undertaking the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) in 2018.
"Council believes it is important to acknowledge and encourage students who strive for excellence, and these annual awards are our way of saying 'well done' " said Mayor Pretlove.
