Free vaccine for 15-19 year olds ending 31 December
To combat a recent rise in cases of deadly strains of meningococcal disease, the Victorian Government has introduced a free, time-limited vaccination program for young people aged 15-19 in Victoria.
The vaccine is safe and effective and free until 31 December 2017 at secondary schools, West Wimmera Shire Maternal & Child Health Nurse, or at the doctor.
Fifteen to 19 year olds are of the most frequent carriers of meningococcal disease.
Although uncommon, meningococcal disease can become life-threatening very quickly. Survivors often loose fingers, toes or limbs. Invasive meningococcal disease causes death in about five to 10 per cent of cases.
Getting the vaccine outside of school
To receive the vaccine outside of the school setting, for example if the young person does not attend secondary school or is away from school on the day the vaccine is provided, eligible young people can also get the free vaccine from our Maternal & Child Health Nurse
