West Wimmera Shire Council residents will receive a new glass recycling bin from Tuesday.

Bins will be delivered to residents and businesses that currently receive kerbside recycling collection.

Bin delivery will take a few days and will start in the northern half of the shire, gradually moving south. If you haven’t received a purple-lidded glass recycling bin by the end of the week, please call Council on 13 99 72.

The bins will be delivered to roadsides. If you are not going to be home during the delivery period, please arrange for a neighbour to bring your bin in from the road.

The collection of glass bins will start on July 19 for Kaniva, Miram, Lillimur, Serviceton, and Apsley, and on July 20 for Edenhope, Harrow, Goroke, and Douglas.

Glass recycling bins will be collected every four weeks.

It is important to note that the collection times might differ from regular recycling or waste collection schedules. Therefore, residents are kindly requested to place their bins out the night before the scheduled collection day or no later than 6am on the day of collection to ensure timely pickup.

To provide further guidance, each household will receive an information pamphlet and an updated recycling calendar along with their new bin.

Under the new recycling system, residents will need to separate their waste and recycling into three streams:

• glass recycling

• mixed recycling

• general rubbish.

By changing the way residents sort their waste and recycling at home, more of their glass bottles and jars can be turned into things like roads and new glass jars.

Broken glass makes other items like cardboard, paper and plastic hard to recycle. By putting glass bottles and jars in a separate bin more of them can be recycled into new things.

Residents who don’t currently receive kerbside recycling collection can deposit their glass for free at Council Transfer Stations. There will also be community drop-off points at Edenhope, Lake Charlegrark, Kaniva, Miram, Lillimur, Serviceton, and Telopea Downs.
