Background information

West Wimmera Shire Council is preparing a funding application under the Federal Government’s Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program to support the proposed Kaniva Tourism & Wellbeing Precinct, a transformative infrastructure project that aims to revitalise community spaces, support wellbeing, and enhance the tourism experience in Kaniva.

This integrated project will deliver a suite of upgrades across key public sites, improving access, safety, and amenity while boosting the town’s capacity to attract and host visitors.

Proposed scope of works

The Kaniva Tourism & Wellbeing Precinct includes:

  • Kaniva swimming pool redevelopment: New amenities building, splash park, accessible ramp, wet deck surrounds, pool enclosure, and plant and equipment upgrades.

  • Caravan park expansion and upgrades: Removal of the old scout hall, installation of new cabins, powered and unpowered sites, public toilets, roadworks, shelters, seating and landscaping.

  • New accessible playspace: Inclusive equipment and all-abilities access.

  • War memorial restoration: Conservation of the Band Park cannon and monument.

  • Pedestrian safety improvements: Installation of a signalised crossing on Commercial Street.

  • Road and pathway upgrades: Key kerb, channel, road and footpath improvements.

  • Silo art lighting: Installation of lighting to highlight the Kaniva Silo Art feature.

Project benefits

This project aims to:

  • Renew and upgrade ageing community infrastructure

  • Create more accessible and inclusive public spaces

  • Support the health and wellbeing of local residents

  • Boost visitor experiences and local tourism

  • Improve pedestrian and traffic safety through strategic streetscape improvements

By investing in a connected and vibrant precinct, the project will make Kaniva an even more welcoming and functional destination for both the local community and travelling public.

Timeline

If funding is successful:

  • Planning and community consultation will begin in late 2025

  • Construction and delivery must be completed by March 2027

Minor disruptions to the caravan park or pool may occur during construction, but Council will work to minimise impacts.
