West Wimmera Shire Council is upgrading Kaniva’s Band Park with all new accessible toilets and paths.

As the central hub of Kaniva, Band Park holds a special place in the community, offering a prime location for viewing the town's iconic silo art, housing the War Memorial, and featuring a playground for children.

Works on the $240,000 redevelopment will start later this month, with the demolition of the existing toilet block.

The redevelopment will include a much-needed upgrade of the existing toilet block to address non-compliance, poor visibility, and maintenance issues.

The upgraded toilets will include all-accessible and ambulant toilets, as well as new LED lighting.

Hazardous areas and uneven paths around the toilet area will be fixed, allowing for better access and improved safety.

New paths will be constructed to ensure safer navigation for all-abilities, including those with mobility aids and prams. The paths will also link to an upgraded viewing area for the Kaniva silo art, providing better access and accessibility.

Council Chief Executive Officer David Bezuidenhout said the improvements to Band Park reflect Council’s commitment to creating high quality and more accessible public spaces for residents and visitors.

“Band Park is well used by both residents and visitors,” he said.

“It is a stopping point for many travellers passing through town, and people regularly use the toilets and picnic tables there.

“It also attracts a lot of tourists due to the silo art and its viewing area.”

“These changes to the park will have a positive impact on the space. I have no doubt residents will welcome the improvements.”
