The below information has been provided for residents regarding the Kaniva windmill and the steps that have been taken so far to address noise issues.

Initial steps

Initial reports of the windmill’s noise were noted on Saturday November 11th, sent through as a Customer Request (CRM).

What work has been done so far?

The WWSC maintenance officer visited the site after receiving the CRM to assess, document and devise an action plan.

Difficulties in finding suitable specialists and reliance on low windspeeds hindered progress in resolving the issue.

Maintenance activities (Nov 27th - Dec 17th 2023): Vegetation was cleared for improved access. Equipment including an elevated work platform was utilised to undertake Inspections and oil change. Windmill platform was removed due to deterioration.

Despite efforts, the initial actions didn't resolve the issue, necessitating further waiting for suitable wind conditions to progress.

New contractors were sought due to previous unavailability this side of Christmas. A crane and man box were sourced for specialised access.

Recent progress (Dec 17th 2023): During low wind conditions on December 17th, specialists secured the rotor temporarily, forced oil into the bearing location, and investigated the motor using a crane.

More oil was pumped into the windmill on December 20th.

What is the next step?

Following the investigation, it is believed that a bearing failure could be the cause of the noise.  To confirm this, further investigation is required, including the possible lowering of the head to repair and removal of rotor blades.

What is causing the noise?

We believe the noise is being cause by bearing failure.

Can you just tie/chain it up to stop it spinning?

Unfortunately, due to the size of the windmill, if we chain it up, the blades will bend and parts may break off due to the wind. We have locked it up as much as possible, but still allowing it to move slowly with gusts.
