West Wimmera Shire Council and West Wimmera Health Service are supporting an event this week organised by volunteers to celebrate recent improvements to the Rogerson Street Playground in Kaniva.

The playground has undergone an extensive makeover by Kaniva residents who have contributed many hours beautifying the grounds, upcycling outdoor furniture and installing new playground equipment purchased by them for the park.

Council provided $10,000 to the playground volunteers group to assist with the project and have extended the soft fall and other infrastructure needs for the playground through their annual maintenance program. The Kaniva community donated the remaining funds.

Kaniva resident, Annie Austin, and her fellow volunteers in the group are holding a barbecue at the playground to celebrate the project’s completion. The barbecue is taking place on Thursday 10 December at 6pm.

The free barbecue is being coordinated by the Health Promotion team at West Wimmera Health Service through their Café Health project, an initiative that aims to improve social inclusion and empower communities to lead healthier, happier lives. Attendees are requested to bring their own drinks and to ensure they are non-alcoholic. Council will be contributing dessert at the event.

The playground renewal is well documented on Ms Austin’s personal Facebook page. New playground equipment includes a basketball board, climbing frame, slide and a disc swing.

West Wimmera Shire Council Mayor, Bruce Meyer, is full of admiration for the hardworking volunteers and looking forward to the event.

“This is an outstanding display of community pride and volunteering by the Rogerson Street residents and Kaniva community and I applaud their efforts to see this project to completion, “ he said.

“We are delighted to be able to assist with part-funding the playground and helping the group with the equipment installation and maintenance of the grounds.

“I expect to see generations of Kaniva families and visitors having fun at this revamped playground; it looks amazing”.

Enquiries regarding the barbecue can be made directly to Annie Austin on 0417 080 030 or Amanda Munn, Events and Volunteer Administration at West Wimmera Shire Council 13 99 72.
