Volunteering is something that Australians generally embrace, whether it is in the area of education, sporting, social, health, emergency services or some other endeavour.

West Wimmera Shire has numerous opportunities for residents, and even visitors, to contribute to the overall wellbeing of their community by supporting the efforts of the many local organisations that use or need volunteers.

One of the factors that may cause people to not volunteer is they are unfamiliar with what is needed by an organisation, for example, thinking that the CFA needs firefighters, and not considering that it also needs secretaries and treasurers and radio operators and it has all manner of support roles that may be useful without ever needing to don the fashionable yellow overalls and climb into a red truck or requiring a high level of fitness or mobility.

Most volunteer organisations are the sameā€”the public face of the volunteering may only be a small component of the behind the scenes support that you may have the skills, time or capacity to add to the mix. Please consider investigating the many volunteering options available in the links on this page. Also consider that for some support roles you don't need to live right near the location where the service is delivered, and some of our more remote localities are the ones most in need of support that could easily come from the larger communities.

Volunteering is vital in our communities, without volunteers much of the work which happens in our communities would never be realised by using a paid workforce.

West Wimmera Shire is responsible for a variety of volunteer programs including:

  • Meals on Wheels
  • Drivers for the Community Car
  • Kaniva Taxi Service
  • Kaniva Fauna Park

The West Wimmera Shire's Community Support Officer, Amanda Munn, is the first point of contact if you are interested in Volunteering for Council and can be contacted on (03) 5392 7700 for further information.

West Wimmera Shire Council would like to thank everyone who have volunteers within their community to make our Shire a better place to live.

Council would also like to thank the Edenhope Businesses whose logos appear below for volunteering either themselves or their staff to deliver Meals on Wheels. Your volunteering is appreciated.
