The Harrow AFL Lighting Upgrade at Harrow Recreation Reserve is set to bring significant improvements to the facility, enhancing its usability for both football players and the broader community. The project will involve the installation of new lighting towers and LED lighting fixtures around the AFL oval, ensuring the entire ground is adequately illuminated to meet current standards. The project is funded through a combination of contributions: $250,000 from the State Government's 2023-24 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund under the Community Sports Lighting Stream, $33,334 from West Wimmera Shire Council, and $50,000 from the Harrow Recreation Reserve Committee and the local community.
The current lighting at Harrow Recreation Reserve is outdated and does not meet AFL standards, resulting in poor visibility across the oval. This limits the facility's use, especially during evening training sessions and community events. The upgrade is crucial not only to improve the quality of play for the football club but also to create a safer and more welcoming environment for everyone who enjoys the reserve.
The project will involve the demolition of the existing lighting infrastructure, which no longer meets the requirements of modern sports facilities. In its place, four new lighting poles will be installed around the AFL oval, each equipped with state-of-the-art LED fixtures. These new lights will be designed to provide 100 lux lighting across the entire oval, ensuring excellent visibility for players, officials, and spectators.
This upgrade is aligned with AFL standards, meaning the oval will now be suitable for higher levels of competition and safer for night-time use. The new lighting system will also be more energy-efficient, reducing ongoing operational costs for the reserve and contributing to sustainability goals.
