Apsley Netball/Tennis Courts & Lighting Upgrade
- Project typeFacility Upgrade/Construction
- Project value$833,179
The Apsley Recreation Reserve is situated at Splatt Street, Apsley. It is used by the Edenhope-Apsley Football Netball Club, which plays in the Horsham District Football Netball League. The recreation reserve is also home to the Apsley Tennis Club.
The current facilities at the recreation reserve provide unsuitable playing conditions for both netball and tennis. The courts did not meet the required standards for court design and run offs. Competitive netball is played at the reserve throughout the year, yet on previous occasions, netball has had to be cancelled and relocated to an alternative venue as the courts were too slippery and deemed unsafe.
The Apsley Recreation Reserve committee of management has been lobbying for this project since 2019. West Wimmera Shire Council completed a project scoping exercise with the committee in early 2020 and set aside funding in the 2021-22 budget to enable the project planning to take place and ensure the project was shovel ready.
The project was identified in the Apsley community plan in 2019 and has been a focus for the many groups in town. Council received many letters of support from the Apsley community for the project, including from the recreation reserve committee of management, Apsley Tennis Club, Apsley Primary School, Edenhope Apsley Football Netball Club, and the Horsham District Football Netball League.
The redevelopment of Apsley Recreation Reserve will involve the demolition and removal of the current non-compliant and unsafe netball and tennis courts, followed by the construction of two new netball courts and three new tennis courts, complete with lighting. The lighting will help facilitate games and training at night.
The courts have been designed to be in line with Netball Victoria and Tennis Victoria standards local competition standards.
The project will also involve the removal and disposal of the existing tennis and netball courts. The area will also need to be cleaned up and landscaped to ensure it is safe for community use.
Accessible footpaths and parking will be installed in the area to provide safer, more inclusive access to the recreation reserve and the courts. The new courts will also be situated in a position that gives players and spectators immediate access to an existing undercover viewing area and change room facilities.
