Emergency financial assistance is now available for people who have been impacted by foods in Victoria.

The Federal Government’s disaster recovery allowance is a short-term payment that is available to residents in West Wimmera Shire.

The disaster recovery allowance has been made available to assist employees and sole traders who experienced a loss of income as a direct result of a major disaster, including floods.

It is payable for a maximum of 13 weeks and is taxable.

Payments can be started from the date residents began losing income.

West Wimmera Shire Council Chief Executive David Bezuidenhout encouraged anyone who had been adversely affected by floods to apply for the assistance.

“While we didn’t have any major infrastructure damage in the shire during the floods, I have no doubt some people in our communities have been affected,” he said.

“Anyone who has lost income due to the disaster should consider seeking financial assistance.

“Disaster Recovery Allowance can be applied for online through Centrelink.”

Residents have until May 28, 2023 to make a claim for assistance.

Payment rates vary depending on personal circumstances.
