Kaniva museum committee handed back to the community

The Kaniva Museum and Historical Collection Committee is looking for new members after changes to its committee status.
West Wimmera Shire Council has decided to dissolve the committee’s section 86 status, meaning the group will now become a community committee.
Chief executive David Leahy said a user agreement had been developed for the management of the facility going forward.
“The agreement will list the responsibilities of both parties,” he said.
“Council will remain responsible for the building and any major repairs to the building, while the committee will manage the collection.”
Mr Leahy said by dissolving the section 86 status, the committee would now be easier for the community to run.
“Previously, all committee appointments needed to be done by Council and the committee was required to provide an annual report to Council,” he said.
“This made the ongoing management by the committee onerous.”
The Kaniva Museum and Historical Collection Committee is now hoping to see more people join the group and help with the ongoing management of the historical collection.
The committee will have a general meeting on Wednesday, March 11 2020 at 5pm at the Kaniva Council Chamber.
The purposes of the meeting will be to elect a new committee.
Mr Leahy said the meeting was open to anyone who wished to attend, especially those who were interested in joining the committee.
Nominations for office bearers will be taken on the night.
The meeting with be at the Kaniva Council Chamber, 25 Baker Street, Kaniva.
