West Wimmera Shire residents are being reminded to keep non-recyclable items out of their recycling bins, after a recent audit found many non-approved materials.

West Wimmera Shire Council’s kerbside collection contractors Wimmera Mallee Waste is required to conduct periodic audits to under the contract to record contents and identify any non-approved recyclables or hazardous material that might be present.

An audit carried out on August 12 and 13 has revealed that there has been some non-approved materials placed in the recycle bins.

Since mid-May, all of West Wimmera Shire Council’s recycling has been taken to Cleanaway Waste Management in Melbourne for processing, and residents are reminded that there will be costly penalties to Council if items are not placed in the correct bin.

Penalties will also be applied if the recyclables contamination rate is more than 10 per cent.

Both Council and Wimmera Mallee Waste stress that all recyclables placed in bins must be clean and contain no contamination.

The following items are not to be placed in recycling bins:

  • Plastic bags
  • Disposable nappies
  • Soft plastics and polystyrene
  • Tetra Paks and long life containers
  • Clothing
  • Food scraps
  • E-waste

E-waste needs to be kept separate and taken to your nearest transfer station, free of charge. E-waste includes items such as power leads and batteries.

Items that can be recycled include:

  • Rigid plastic bottles and containers (please lids separately in waste bin)
  • Steel cans, aluminium tins and foil
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Cardboard
  • Clean paper
