Kaniva Shire Hall is a significant community asset, hosting a wide range of events, performances, meetings and private functions. The proposed upgrades will ensure the facility continues to meet the needs of residents, visitors and community groups into the future.

West Wimmera Shire Council is seeking funding through the Tiny Towns Fund to deliver the Kaniva Shire Hall Amenities Upgrade project.

The project focuses on essential upgrades to the existing amenities within the Kaniva Shire Hall to improve accessibility, functionality and long-term usability. The works include the replacement of the existing urinal facilities and the creation of two new ambulant toilet facilities, alongside associated minor refurbishment works such as carpentry, painting and tiling.

Scope

The project includes the demolition of the existing urinal facility and installation of two new urinal units to replace end-of-life infrastructure. It also involves the modification of two existing toilet cubicles to create one new male ambulant toilet and one new female ambulant toilet, improving accessibility and user experience.

Minor associated works will support these upgrades, including carpentry, tiling and painting to ensure all refurbished areas are safe, functional and consistent with the existing building.

Why this project is important

The Kaniva Shire Hall is a key civic and cultural venue for the township and surrounding district, supporting community events, performances and gatherings. Built in 1927 and opened in 1929, it is also a rare heritage-listed building featuring a cameo ceiling of significant architectural value.

The current amenities are reaching end of life, with the existing urinal showing significant corrosion and risk of failure. Without replacement, this would reduce the hall’s capacity to support larger events and gatherings, impacting its ongoing viability as a community venue.

The absence of ambulant toilet facilities also limits accessibility and inclusivity. The project will strengthen Kaniva’s ability to host events, support local groups and attract visitors.
