As the number of coronavirs cases increases across the state, we all need to continue to do the right thing and look after each other. It is a time to be cautious and think about our actions. Even though there are confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Wimmera, we must remember to remain calm and not panic. We all must continue to follow the rules in order to keep our communities safe. Now more than ever is not the time for complacency.

The rules remain the same – practice good hygiene and social distancing at all times. Don’t let strangers into your house and limited the number of visitors you have to your home. Avoid unnecessary travel and continue to shop locally wherever possible. If you are unwell, make an appointment with a medical professional. There are now strict rules around borders, so please don’t attempt to enter South Australia without permission.

It is important to ensure that if you are unwell at all, please do not attend work and if you have flu or cold like symptoms please seek a test as soon as possible. Also be mindful of restricting your movement around the region as a measure to protect yourself, your family and other residents.

To suppress the virus to a manageable level, everyone will be making sacrifices, such as, restricting visitors to your home, missing out on family visits from outside of the region and restrictions on movement and some leisure activities. These measures, while difficult, are necessary to enable a more rapid return to a lifestyle that we are all more accustomed to in West Wimmera.

In tough times, it’s important to remember that everyone’s coping mechanism is different. Please have empathy for others and respect their opinions. If you are struggling in any way, either mentally or financially, reach out for help. West Wimmera Shire staff can help you get in touch with the services you need. If you are unsure about what the restrictions are, or if you need to self-isolate, refer to the Department of Health and Human Services website for up to date, accurate information.

I want to thank West Wimmera residents for the strength they have shown during these difficult times. We will eventually get through this, but it is going to take everyone doing the right thing and following any restrictions that are in place. Please continue to look after each other and stay safe.
