Activities for youth and children during COVID-19 restrictions
Published on 04 September 2020
West Wimmera Shire Council has been working hard to provide youth and children a variety of activities to help stem the boredom of being at home over an extended time of stage three COVID-19 restrictions.
Over the next couple of weeks leading up to the predicted easing of restrictions, there will be something on most days, with details posted on the Youth Services West Wimmera and West Wimmera Shire Council Facebook pages and website.
These activities are open to all kids everywhere, and not just exclusive to West Wimmera. This is to allow a high level of participation. Online events are open to all people everywhere.
Ongoing, until the end of September there is a Kids Art Competition and a COVID Poetry Competition, with the view to holding an exhibition after restrictions ease to allow public events again.
On Wednesday September 2 to 9 there is a cupcake baking competition, and to enter all people need to do is post a picture of their entry on Youth Services West Wimmera Facebook page or send a messenger entry to this page.
This might be extended depending on the level of interest in the activity.
September 9 from lunch time onward, there is a Backyard BBQ, Camp Oven Cook Off where people are encouraged to bring their best barbecue/camp oven game and enter their photos or videos on social media. Again, this might be extended depending on interest and also on the weather.
Saturday September 12 from 7pm to 9pm, we will have an online event featuring Skuzz, singer songwriter from Horsham and Reece Mastin of X-Factor fame. He will also be available for a question and answer session after the gig.
Youth officer Leah Davies said while she hoped that restrictions preventing movement would soon ease, in the meanwhile West Wimmera Shire Council would continue to provide things for our young people to do.
“We extend the invitation to participate far and wide so others from other regions can participate as well,” she said.
“We are indeed all in this together, and if we can’t spend time with others at this time we can at least join forces to stay busy and active during this really difficult time.”
It is requested that photos provided be allowed to be used for publicity purposes. People should specify if they do not want their photo to be used.
