Bush kinder brings learning outdoors at Kaniva

Kaniva Kindergarten children explored the natural environment at Kaniva Fauna Park on Wednesday as part of the kindergarten’s new Bush Kinder program.

The children spent the morning exploring the bush and investigating discoveries including a burrow, old duck eggs, a small fish and a yabby claw.

The natural environment also sparked questions about the water at the site.

Children wondered where the water came from, where it went and what might live in and around it.

The session encouraged children to follow their interests and learn through hands-on experiences.

Children shared ideas, made observations and worked together to understand what they were discovering.

Council Chief Executive Officer David Bezuidenhout said Bush Kinder provided valuable opportunities for children to learn outdoors.

“Learning in a natural environment encourages children to be curious and follow their own interests,” he said.

“Children can explore, ask questions and develop their own ideas through hands-on experiences.”

Mr Bezuidenhout said the program also supported children’s social development.

“Bush Kinder gives children opportunities to communicate, cooperate and solve problems together,” he said.

“These experiences help build confidence and independence while developing a connection with the natural environment.”

The Bush Kinder program is being delivered at Kaniva Fauna Park during terms two and three with support from the Victorian Government’s Bush Kinder Grant Program.
