West Wimmera Shire Council has awarded money to seven community groups as part of its grants program.

Five groups will receive money under round two of the 2024/2024 Community Strengthening Grants program.

Council approved applications received from Dinyarrak Fire Brigade, Kaniva Lions Club, Apsley Pony Club, Apsley Tennis Club, and Lake Charlegrark County Music Marathon Inc.

Lake Charlegrark Country Music Marathon will receive $10,000 to purchase a mobile cool room.

Apsley Tennis Club will receive $5000 to upgrade its kitchen facilities so they are cleaner and safer for food preparation.

Apsley Pony Club will receive $4480 to purchase furniture and appliances to complete the new kitchen and club rooms.

Kaniva Lions Club will receive $4399 to purchase a new mower to keep the lawn section to the Kaniva Cemetery in pristine condition.

Dinyarrak Fire Brigade will receive $1290.33 to purchase a new trailer to house a quick-fill pump, hoses and equipment.

Council also awarded money to two community groups as part of its Sponsorship and Contributions Grant.

Edenhope P&A Society Quality Show will receive $500, and Kaniva Link Neighbourhood House will receive $1600.

Mayor Tim Meyer said it was great to be able to award the community groups money for these important projects.

“These are all worthy projects that will help these groups complete much-needed upgrades,” he said.

Cr Meyer said all the groups that received money would use the grant to benefit the community.

The Community Strengthening Grants program is designed to promote and increase participation of residents in community initiatives, to build and strengthen local networks and partnerships, and to support community leadership, learning, and skill development.

This funding has two rounds each year and there are four categories for the funding – community projects, community events, facilities upgrades and major projects.

Grants of up to $10,000 are available for some categories.

The Sponsorship and Contributions Grants program provides communities with the opportunity to collaborate with Council to make their locality a better place to live.
