West Wimmera Shire Council has endorsed a refreshed approach to its business grant program, with updates designed to make it easier for local businesses to access funding and invest in their shopfronts.

At its March meeting, Council approved amendments to the newly named Shopfront Improvement Grant Program, replacing the former Business Streetscape Grant.

The updated program better reflects how businesses are using the funding, with a stronger focus on improving the presentation, accessibility and functionality of street-facing shopfronts across the shire.

Mayor Tim Meyer said the changes would simplify the application process while delivering stronger outcomes for both businesses and local town centres.

“Local businesses play a vital role in the character and vibrancy of our communities,” he said.

“These updates make it easier for businesses to apply for support, while giving Council the flexibility to fund projects that deliver real visual and economic impact.”

As part of the update, the program has been renamed to better reflect its focus on shopfront improvements.

The previous tiered application system has been removed in favour of a single, streamlined process, making it clearer and more accessible for applicants.

The revised program also introduces a $2 to $1 co-contribution model, ensuring businesses maintain a meaningful investment in their own improvements while still receiving financial support from Council.

“This shared investment model encourages businesses to take an active role in enhancing their shopfronts, while helping make projects more achievable,” Cr Meyer said.

Eligible businesses can apply for grants of up to $5,000 to support improvements such as painting, lighting, accessibility upgrades, and façade enhancements.

Council has allocated $20,000 annually to the program, with applications open until the funding is exhausted.

“These improvements don’t just benefit individual businesses, they contribute to more attractive, accessible and vibrant town centres right across West Wimmera Shire,” Cr Meyer said.
