West Wimmera Shire Council has endorsed its 2026-27 draft budget, with a continued focus on financial sustainability, service delivery and investment in critical infrastructure.

Council endorsed both the 2026-27 draft budget and annual plan at a meeting on Wednesday.

The draft budget includes a capital works program of more than $8.27 million, representing a significant increase on the previous year.

Council’s priorities for the coming year include roads and infrastructure renewal, improvements to community facilities and continued investment in essential assets that support the wellbeing of residents.

A significant portion of the capital works program, about $5.4 million, will be directed towards the renewal of critical infrastructure, with a further $1.1 million allocated to upgrades of existing assets.

This approach reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to delivering quality services while maintaining a financially sustainable organisation.

The average general rate and municipal charge will increase by 2.75 per cent, in line with the State Government’s Fair Go Rates System cap.

Mayor Tim Meyer said the Draft Budget responded to ongoing financial pressures while maintaining a strong focus on community outcomes.

“It maintains our focus on essential services and infrastructure, while continuing to look for efficiencies and opportunities to strengthen our financial position,” he said.

“We are continuing to invest in our roads, community spaces and infrastructure, while actively seeking state and federal funding to maximise outcomes for our community.

“Our biggest challenge still remains securing funding, especially when it comes to building roads.

“That is our biggest challenge, it’s our biggest cost and it’s where we need as much funding support as possible.”

Cr Meyer said a highlight of the budget was funding for a toilet block at Edenhope Lions Park.

“This is something the community has been wanting for a long time, and we are committed to providing funding for this important upgrade,” he said.

“We are working in a very tight budget, but we are still able to do small things that help make our communities better.”

Community members are encouraged to review the draft budget and annual plan and provide feedback by 12pm on Monday 11 May 2026.

All feedback received will be considered by Council prior to the adoption of the final budget and annual plan at a meeting on June 17.

The Draft Budget is available for inspection on Council’s website via the ‘Have Your Say’ section.

Hard copies can also be viewed at Council’s Customer Service Centres in Edenhope and Kaniva.
