West Wimmera Shire residents can dispose of their green waste for free later this month.

At a meeting on Wednesday, Council decided to introduce a free green waste disposal fortnight for residents, which would allow them to deliver green waste to transfer stations at no cost.

The free disposal fortnight will run from November 28 to December 11.

Mayor Tim Meyer said this would provide an opportunity for residents in the shire to clean up their overgrown vegetation caused by the wet spring the region has experienced.

“The excessive vegetation at the moment could be a potential fire hazard as the weather warms up,” he said.

“This is great opportunity for residents to clean up their properties and get rid of any unwanted green waste.”

Cr Meyer said the free disposal fortnight would hopefully deter people from illegally dumping green waste or placing it into their general rubbish bins.

During the free green waste disposal fortnight, residents can take their green waste to their nearest transfer station.

Council also moved to make the free green waste disposal period an annual event that occurred between July and September each year, depending on seasonal and operational needs.
