Young people from Kaniva College are enjoying learning and playing music in after school, online music lessons with Skuzz’s Music and Tutoring.

Currently there are four young people taking lessons for drums, keyboard, and guitar.

Lessons are free with equipment available to lease for $10 a week, making it affordable to try something new, without the financial burden of purchasing expensive equipment.

Youth officer Leah Davies said this arrangement took the risk out of trying something new and provided young people the opportunity to learn from a trained professional.

“We are offering spaces to younger students as well, in the hope that they will foster skills in music and continue to develop these through their teen years and beyond,” she said.

“The biggest factor in young people not wanting to learn a new skill is feeling self-conscious and learning something new is always a challenge.

“The goal is to reach beyond that initial discomfort to get to the point where they are confident to build on the skills they attain in those initial lessons.”

Lessons will be offered to Edenhope and Goroke students in the future, but the Kaniva pilot program will inform how these are rolled out.

New spots will become available throughout the year and a wide range of instruments are available including drums, keyboard, guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele.
