West Wimmera Shire Council has secured new funding to continue upgrades to the Kadnook-Connewirricoo Road.

Council received $1.2 million from the Federal Government’s Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program for the design and construct of the road.

The project will widen and strengthen a 3.72-kilometre section of the road, increasing the seal width to 6.2 metres.

This upgrade will improve safety and productivity for heavy vehicles and other road users travelling along the route.

The works form part of Council’s long-term plan to bring the entire 13.5 kilometres of Kadnook-Connewirricoo Road to a consistent 6.2-metre seal width.

The road is recognised as a Strategic Local Road in the Wimmera Southern Mallee Regional Transport Strategy due to its importance as a heavy vehicle link.

The total project budget is $1.5 million, with West Wimmera Shire Council contributing $300,000 alongside the Federal Government funding.

Mayor Tim Meyer said the project was an important step in improving the shire’s transport network.

“Kadnook-Connewirricoo Road is a key freight route, and this upgrade will deliver safer conditions for all road users while supporting the region’s productivity,” he said.

Works are expected to begin in late 2026 and will be completed in line with Council’s road construction schedule.
