West Wimmera Shire Council has named Goroke’s Neil Walter as the 2026 Senior Citizen of the Year.
Mr Walter was presented with the award at West Wimmera Shire’s Seniors Concert in Edenhope on Thursday.
Mr Walter has dedicated decades to volunteering and supporting the Goroke community.
He has been a member of the Goroke Lions Club since its early days. He has served as both secretary and president and contributed to numerous fundraising activities and community projects.
His work includes maintaining community spaces, supporting local events and raising money for causes across the region.
Mr Walter has also served the Goroke Uniting Church as an elder and parish council member. He has contributed to several local committees, including the Goroke War Memorial Committee.
One of his longest-standing commitments is the Goroke A&P Show, where he has served as a steward for more than 65 years.
Deputy Mayor Helen Hobbs presented Mr Walter with his award and praised his longstanding commitment to the community.
“Neil has given so much of his time to Goroke over many decades,” she said.
“From his work with the Lions Club to maintaining local facilities and supporting community events, he has always been willing to lend a hand.
“His dedication to the Goroke A&P Show for more than 65 years is an outstanding achievement.
“He is a wonderful example of the difference one person can make through volunteering.
“Neil’s contribution has also inspired his children and grandchildren to get involved in their community. This award recognises his generosity, commitment and the lasting impact he has made in Goroke.”
The Senior Citizen of the Year Award recognises shire residents aged 60 years or more who have made a difference to community wellbeing, maintained a positive attitude towards ageing, remained active in their community and encouraged others to do the same.
