Have your say on draft wastewater plan

West Wimmera Shire Council invites community feedback on its updated Onsite Wastewater Management Plan.
The updated plan, developed with funding from the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Change, aims to improve the regulation and management of onsite wastewater systems within the Shire.
The plan was initially developed in 2014 as the Domestic Wastewater Management Plan to ensure effective onsite wastewater management across the shire.
In October 2023, Council received $20,000 in funding to review and update the plan.
The revised plan outlines several key objectives, including developing long-term strategies for onsite wastewater system management; guiding decision-making for individual wastewater systems; managing resources for proactive wastewater management; and fostering cooperation between Council, the community, waste corporations, and catchment management authorities.
The revised plan also includes a prioritised action plan for enhancing the effectiveness of onsite wastewater management within the shire; protecting public health; and ensuring sustainable future development.
Council Chief Executive Officer David Bezuidenhout said the plan would serve as a crucial tool for assessing planning applications in unsewered localities.
“This plan will provide guidance to property owners on compliance requirements,” he said.
Mr Bezuidenhout encouraged all community members to review the draft plan and provide their feedback.
“Community input is essential in shaping the final plan and ensuring it meets the needs and expectations of residents,” he said.
Feedback must be submitted by 5pm on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.
