Kaniva Dog Park now open

West Wimmera Shire Council is pleased to announce that the Kaniva Dog Park is now open.
The new park, located at the Kaniva Wetlands and Fauna Park, opened on Friday.
The project was made possible with $90,000 in funding from the Victorian Government’s New and Upgraded Dog Parks Program.
The purpose-built facility provides a safe and enclosed off-leash area where dogs can exercise, socialise, and train in a controlled environment.
The project was developed to address the lack of a designated dog exercise space within Kaniva while enhancing the overall appeal and functionality of the wetlands precinct.
Council Chief Executive Officer David Bezuidenhout said the new park was a great addition to the town.
“Locals and visitors can now enjoy a secure dog park alongside walking tracks, a playground, public toilets, and picnic areas,” he said.
The dog park features secure fencing with a safety airlock entry, a holding yard, accessible pathways, seating, and waste bins with dog bag dispensers to support responsible pet ownership.
Landscaping works at the fauna park included relocating shrubs, installing new turf, and creating additional green space to replace the area repurposed for the dog park.
“Kaniva is a high-traffic stop for both locals and tourists, and this new facility complements the existing amenities at the wetlands and fauna park,” Mr Bezuidenhout said.
“It’s another way Council is investing in community spaces that bring people together.”
Council reminds all visitors that dogs must remain under effective control while in the park, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
All dog owners are encouraged to enjoy the park responsibly and follow the rules to ensure a safe and welcoming space for everyone.
