West Wimmera Shire Council has endorsed schematic designs for key facilities at the Kaniva Recreation Reserve, marking an important milestone in the long-term planning of sport and recreation infrastructure in Kaniva.

At its May meeting, Council adopted the schematic designs for cricket training nets and storage, hockey field and sports lighting, hockey changerooms and amenities, and netball/AFL female changerooms.

The development of these plans included extensive consultation with local sporting clubs to ensure the needs and priorities of users were considered and reflected throughout the process.

Due to the significant costs of these projects, their delivery will be subject to external funding opportunities, Council budget considerations, and community contributions.

With the plans now in place, Council is better positioned to pursue external funding opportunities and advocate for investment in priority projects.

Mayor Tim Meyer said the facilities plans represented a significant step forward for the Kaniva Recreation Reserve and the broader community.

“The plans reflect years of input from local clubs, user groups and the wider community,” he said.

“It provides a clear and practical roadmap for how the reserve can continue to grow and improve over time.

“Importantly, it also ensures Council is well positioned to pursue future funding opportunities as they become available, with shovel-ready concepts that meet current sporting standards and community needs.”

The development of the plans was made possible through support from the Victorian Government’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund.

Council also acknowledged the role of sporting clubs, State Sporting Associations and Sport and Recreation Victoria in shaping the final designs to ensure they meet facility standards, accessibility requirements and future participation needs.
