Mike Shaw has been appointed as the Wimmera Emergency Management Team’s new coordinator.
Mr Shaw brings a depth of hands-on experience from a similar role with Baw Baw Shire Council and will work across West Wimmera Shire, as well as Hindmarsh, Yarriambiack and Horsham municipalities.
His team is responsible for supporting each Council to meet their emergency management obligations under various legislation, policy and guidelines. It also supports emergency services during an emergency.
“The Wimmera area is so picturesque but also has many risks that come with it. There is a history of fires and floods that need to be factored into everyone’s plans, especially fire preparation coming into the warmer months,” Mr Shaw said.
“My job is to work collaboratively with all of the partnering Councils to build capacity in their emergency space and to assist our communities to build resilience and preparedness.”
Funding for the Wimmera Emergency Management Team comes from the Victorian Government’s Municipal Emergency Resource Program.
