West Wimmera Shire Council has opened nominations for the 2021 Australia Day Awards, which recognise outstanding community service for and within the municipality.

West Wimmera Shire CEO Mr David Leahy welcomes all nominations, “This is an opportunity for community groups and individual citizens to receive well-earned recognition for the wonderful attributes they bring to our region. 2020 has been a challenging year for many. Nominating a deserving person or group for an Australia Day Award is a really great way to show appreciation for the work they do” Mr Leahy said.

Nominations fall under the four categories of Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (for nominees aged 30 and under) and Community Group of the Year.

The Awards are scheduled to be presented on Tuesday 26 January 2021 as part of the shire Australia Day celebrations.

Mr Leahy stated that whilst uncertainty exists around community gatherings due to COVID-19 restrictions, the awards will be presented in compliance with DHHS guidelines. “It is important to recognise the great achievements of the people we have in our community. Whether we get to do that in person in a street or via an online live-stream, we don’t know yet. We will provide updates as more information becomes available”.

Nominations for the Australia Day Awards close on Monday 23rd November 2020. Winners will be chosen by Councillors during a closed session of the December 2020 Council Meeting.
