Last week was Victorian Youth Week and is being celebrated around the state with grants from the State Government of Victoria.
West Wimmera Shire Council through Youth Services West Wimmera celebrated Youth Week, by holding a launch of a pop up youth space in Kaniva, called The Drop Zone.
The event entailed a get together with some of West Wimmera’s young people with some live music by Jason Hoekstra from Geelong. Some locally acquired quality snacks, topped off the afternoon well.
The original plan was to hold a long lunch in the form of a tour around the district, but this plan could not be made COVID friendly enough.
The launch of The Drop Zone was the first of a few pop up Youth spaces to be established across West Wimmera in 2021 with Goroke and Edenhope to have regular days and alternate events in Harrow and Apsley.
Youth Services West Wimmera has purchased a wide range of musical equipment through the FReeZA program which should inspire budding young musicians wanting to learn new skills or hone existing ones. It is hoped that this will become an integral part of The Drop Zone experience.
Harrow also hosted a FReeZA event Level Up! Gaming during Victorian Youth Week which also included young people from Balmoral who were keen to try some new games and mix with others from neighbouring schools and towns. Food and drinks were provided by the Harrow Post, which were gratefully received by a crew of hungry gamers.
Giving young people safe spaces to meet and hang out with their friends, listen to and play music, and enjoy some food and drinks, is a great way of encouraging engagement and social interaction after what has been a very restrictive, stressful and isolating time.
It was a great opportunity to celebrate young people living in our area, giving them the opportunity to participate in local events near them.
