West Wimmera Shire Council is urgently calling for more volunteer drivers for its community transport program.

The Wimmera Southern Mallee Community Transport Project offers a door-to-door transport service between Kaniva and Horsham.

The bus is run by the Centre for Participation in partnership with West Wimmera Shire, and allows residents to access medical appointments, educational opportunities, and recreational activities in Horsham.

Volunteer drivers pick up passengers from their homes in Kaniva, Nhill, Dimboola, and Pimpinio on the way to Horsham each Wednesday.

Council Events and Volunteer Administrator Amanda Munn said the aim of the program was to reduce social exclusion and promote community connection throughout the region.

“It is a wonderful service that so many people in these communities rely on,” she said.

“However, we are desperately seeking more volunteer drivers in order for this program to continue.

“The service uses West Wimmera Shire Council’s own minibus and just a standard driver’s licence is required.

“We’re looking for volunteers who are helpful, reliable, and enjoy other people’s company.”

Council will host a registration day on Thursday, February 17 at 10.30am at the Kaniva Customer Service Centre.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer driver is encouraged to come along and sign up.

Ms Munn said anyone wanting more information could call her on 13 99 72 or email volunteersupport@westwimmera.vic.gov.au.
