COUNCILLOR Bruce Meyer has been re-elected mayor of West Wimmera Shire at a meeting on Friday.

At the meeting, Council chief executive David Leahy also officially inducted councillors for the next four years.

Cr Meyer said he it was an honour and a privilege to be elected as mayor again.

“We’ve all got four years of working for the community in front of us and I’m sure that everyone will do their very best,” he said.

“We as a team have the opportunity now to make improvements for the advancements of our community. Collectively we think alike on many issues and I know that everyone will play their part.

“We look forward to the next four years of this council. In 12 months’ time we want to be able to look back and say ‘we’ve had a good year’.”

Cr Meyer has now served as a councillor for 25 years, including seven previous terms as mayor.

His most recent term was 2019-2020.

He was also the first mayor of the inaugural West Wimmera Shire Council in 1997 following council amalgamations.

Cr Meyer lives in Kaniva with his wife Wendy and has agricultural interests in the area, together with his two adult sons – including Tim Meyer, who was elected to council earlier this month.

In acknowledgement of his significant service to Local Government, Cr Meyer received an Order of Australia Medal earlier this year. In the past, he has also received Victorian Councillor Service Awards and the Mayor Emeritus Award from the Municipal Association of Victoria.

Cr Jodie Pretlove was elected deputy mayor.
