The sharp crack of a stockwhip echoed across Kaniva Recreation Reserve on Wednesday night as crowds gathered for world-record whipcracker Nathan “Whippy” Griggs.

The free event, hosted by West Wimmera Shire Council, included a fast-paced show featuring precision tricks, comedy and demonstrations of different types of whips.

Children were on their feet dancing while Griggs cracked his whip to music.

Several young volunteers were also invited on stage to learn how to crack a whip, drawing big cheers from the audience.

Griggs is a five-time Guinness World Record holder, based in the Northern Territory.

Kaniva was the last stop on his tour of Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria.

West Wimmera Shire Council Chief Executive Officer David Bezuidenhout said the strong attendance showed the value of bringing unique events to local communities.

“It was fantastic to see so many people come together for a night of entertainment in Kaniva,” he said.

“Events like this provide opportunities for families to connect, support local clubs and enjoy something different close to home.”

The event was supported by Kaniva Cricket Club and Kaniva Leeor United Football Netball Club.

Council thanked the local volunteers and community groups who helped make the evening possible.
