West Wimmera Shire Council has prepared a Draft Kaniva Structure Plan and is seeking community feedback.
The plan will guide how Kaniva grows and develops in the future, including land use, housing, infrastructure, transport, and town amenities.
What is the Draft Kaniva Structure Plan?
The Draft Kaniva Structure Plan builds on recommendations from the Small Towns Plan adopted in 2025, which identified the need for targeted settlement planning across several towns in the shire.
A structure plan establishes a long-term vision for a town. It identifies where growth should occur, what types of development are appropriate, and how infrastructure and services can support that growth. Once adopted, the structure plan provides the strategic justification required for any future rezoning of land.
The Draft Kaniva Structure Plan aims to:
- Define a revised town boundary
- Identify locations suitable for future residential development
- Review the need for additional commercial and industrial land
- Guide the future use of key sites, including the former airstrip
- Support tourism development and short-stay accommodation
- Encourage housing options to support key workers
- Improve infrastructure, transport connections and town amenities
- Promote high-quality and coordinated development outcomes.
