Community Local Law no 9 2022

Council’s Community Local Law No 6 of 2012 came into operation on 1 October 2012 and in accordance with the Local Government Act 2020 (LGA 2020) and “sunset’ on 30 September 2022.

Accordingly, Council has commenced the process of preparing a new local law and is inviting input from the community.

The objectives of the proposed Local Law are to provide for the peace, order and good government of   the municipal district by:

  1. managing, regulating and controlling activities and uses on any land which:
    • may be dangerous, cause a nuisance or be detrimental to the amenity of the area or the environment;
    • are directed at maintaining a healthy and safe environment for residents and visitors;
  2. promoting an environment in which residents and visitors to the municipaldistrict can enjoy a lifestyle that is expected of the area;
  3. protecting against behaviour which causes detriment to the amenity and environment of the municipal district;
  4. identifying activities and uses that are not permitted; and
  5. providing for the administration of the Council’s powers and functions.

The impacts of the draft Local Law have been evaluated, and are outlined in the Local Law Community Impact Statement, which, together with the proposed Local Law can be:

  • downloaded from the Council website; or
  • obtained by contacting the Council on 13 99 72 or at council@westwimmera.vic.gov.au or
  • visiting one of the Customer Services Centres in Edenhope or Kaniva.

Responses to the draft Local Law must be provided by a written submission in accordance with Council’s Community Engagement Policy.

In relation to submissions, they should include feedback on the proposed Local Law and the reasons for holding that view, they are not confidential and may be incorporated or summarised (including your first and last name only) into the agenda and minutes of the Council meeting that considers the proposed Local Law. Council agendas and minutes are publicly available on the Council website.

Submissions must be received before 4:00pm on 22 December 2022 and will be considered at the Council meeting on 15 February 2023.
